The Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean Sea is an internal sea (the Latin medius and land); it is this that remains of the wide and ancient sea Tetide, than in the Oligocene (about 30 million years ago) be compressed the collision of two tectonic plates what direct still one on other one determine the activity of the volcanoes Etna, Vesuvius, Stromboli and cause the earthquakes in Italy, Greece and Turkey. 

The Mediterranean Sea is included between Europe, Asia and Africa and is connected to the Atlantic ocean, to West, through the Gibilterra strait; the strait of the Dardanelli, the sea of Marmora and the Bosforo is connected by them with Mar Nero. To south-east, through the Suez Canal (opened in the course in XIX century) it is connected with Mar Rosso and with Indian ocean.
